Safeguarding Policy
Policy Statement
The CRSHJ (Canons Regular of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) is wholly committed to safeguarding the dignity, safety, and well-being of all individuals, especially children, vulnerable adults, and elderly persons, who come into contact with our ministries. We affirm that safeguarding is a sacred duty rooted in the Gospel and the Church’s pastoral mission.
Scope
This policy applies to:
All clergy, religious, staff, volunteers, and associates acting on behalf of the CRSHJ.
All activities, ministries, and services conducted under the auspices of the Church and CRSHJ Institute.
All partner organisations working collaboratively with the CRSHJ.
Principles
We uphold the following safeguarding principles:
Every person has the right to protection from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and harm.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
All concerns will be taken seriously and responded to promptly and appropriately.
We will work in partnership with statutory authorities and safeguarding bodies.
Definitions
‘Children’: Persons under the age of 18.
‘Vulnerable Adults’: Persons aged 18 or over who may be unable to protect themselves from harm due to age, illness, disability, or other circumstances.
‘Elderly Persons’: Individuals aged 65 and over, particularly those with care needs or diminished capacity.
Recruitment and Vetting
All Priests, Deacons, and pastoral ministers within the CRSHJ:
Are subject to rigorous vetting procedures, including character references and safeguarding interviews.
Must undergo an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check, including barred list checks where applicable.
These checks are conducted through the relevant UK authorities or authorised umbrella bodies, in full compliance with DBS eligibility guidance and safeguarding legislation.
No individual may exercise public ministry until clearance is confirmed and documented.
Training and Awareness
All clergy and staff must complete safeguarding induction and refresher training.
Training includes recognising signs of abuse, responding to disclosures, and understanding legal obligations.
Safeguarding responsibilities are embedded in role descriptions and annual reviews.
Responding to Concerns
Any safeguarding concern must be reported immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
If a person is at immediate risk, emergency services must be contacted without delay.
All allegations or incidents will be documented, investigated, and reported to statutory authorities as required.
Confidentiality and Data Protection
All safeguarding records are stored securely and handled in accordance with UK GDPR and data protection legislation.
Consent is obtained for the use of personal data, including images, unless overridden by safeguarding necessity.
Review and Oversight
This policy is reviewed annually by the CRSHJ Chapter, chaired by the Canon Superior General.
Safeguarding is a standing item on the agenda of governance meetings.
A central register of DBS checks and safeguarding training is maintained and monitored.
