Welcome to the CRSHJ Seminary Academy of Priestly Studies
Your preparation as an ordained Canon Regular extends over a comprehensive period of 18 months. The first term in the Institute’s Seminary Syllabus provides an essential introduction to key foundational themes that underpin your vocation. These include the History of Christianity, the teachings of the first Apostles as found in the Didache, the essential elements of Christian Philosophy, and a Narrative Study of Catholic Theology. This practical, yet comprehensive approach aims to equip students with a solid and thorough grounding in the core aspects of the Faith, ensuring a well-rounded theological and spiritual foundation.
The second term centres on the lived experience of being a Canon Regular, offering a thorough and detailed introduction to the Liturgy of the Hours, as well as the principal Liturgies observed within the Catholic Latin Rite. It also provides an explanation of your clerical attire, including detailed guidelines on when and how it should be worn appropriately. Additionally, this term covers the use and significance of various liturgical books, the proper handling and deeper meaning of vestments, and other related ceremonial aspects that are essential to your formation and enrich your daily spiritual practice.
The third and final term before you receive Holy Priestly Orders is dedicated specifically to you and your personal growth. This important period focuses on your responsibilities as a Canon Regular and is a valuable time for deep reflection and prayerful discernment. It allows you to understand more profoundly which kind of apostolate truly inspires you and aligns with your personal talents and spiritual calling. This stage helps you determine the specific area of ministry where you feel most called to dedicate your efforts wholeheartedly and serve with a steadfast commitment to the mission entrusted to you.
Durham Cathedral, County Durham, England
The Academy, established online and governed by the CRSHJ, is situated in the historic City of Durham, County Durham—a place steeped in ecclesial and academic heritage. Durham’s 932-year-old Norman Cathedral stands as a testament to enduring faith, while the globally respected University of Durham bears witness to the city’s scholarly excellence.
Though the Academy of Priestly Studies operates mostly online and independently of the University campus, it draws inspiration from the city’s centuries-old legacy of theological enquiry, rigorous study, and intellectual formation. The Academy’s curriculum is shaped not only by academic precision but by a deep commitment to the spiritual and pastoral demands of priestly life in today’s world. You will study mostly online and remain where you live, for your convenience. However, you should expect the same rigorous study approach as if you were physically present in class.
Under the guidance of the Canons Regular, you do not merely study—you are formed. You begin your journey as a Seminarian, and by grace, discipline, obedience, steadfastness and discernment, you emerge a Priest… Proper.
A man of the altar, the Word, and the people. Rooted in solid and time-served tradition, ready for mission.
TUITION FEES AND OTHER COSTS
The Academy of Priestly Studies, under the care of the Canons Regular of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (CRSHJ), does not levy tuition fees upon CRSHJ’s seminarians.
As a result, your financial contribution for the full 18-month programme is virtually £0.00.
You may well ask, “What’s the catch?”
There is no catch!… Your priestly education is offered freely because the Canons Regular have chosen to absorb the full cost of your academic and vocational formation. This policy reflects a shared commitment to nurturing future priests without placing financial burdens upon them.
The estimated cost borne over the course of your studies is approximately £31,360.00, spanning 392 working days of guided formation, theological instruction, and pastoral preparation. Just remember, your financial contribution for the full 18-month programme is virtually £0.00. We absorb that.
COSTS YOU DO HAVE TO PAY FOR
There are some costs you must be able to afford, mostly these are:
Books, several are mandatory reading as part of your study plan.
